Restore Data from Hard Disks and Other Media with Unformat

Most of us have lost important data from our computers or other digital storage devices at least once, and if you are one of those who have been in such a situation before, then you likely already know just how frustrating it can be.

Once you have emptied the Recycle Bin or formatted a hard disk or other data storage device, you suddenly remember when it's just seconds too late that you have something stored on it which you wanted to keep. This is one of the most common computer-related problems of all time.

When you empty the Recycle Bin, delete a hard disk partition or format a hard drive or other disk, you might assume from Windows' warnings that your data is gone for good. However, with software like Unformat to help you in such situations, you will likely find that you can recover files from a formatted hard drive or unformat hard drive partitions entirely.

Permanently deleting data is actually a rather more complex process than you might think. All of the files stored on your hard drive, USB pen drive or any other kind of digital storage media are actually physically located on the disk in the form of millions of ones and zeroes. For this data to be completely and permanently deleted, these ones and zeroes literally need to be written over.

The original data needs to be overwritten by another file copy or creation operation, or by using secure deletion software, a special third-party program which overwrites data with zeroes to remove any trace of the original file. However, formatting a disk does not actually do this. Instead, it deletes the file table to indicate to the operating system (such as Microsoft Windows) that the space which was previously occupied by the files is now free.

Unformat is a program which exploits this fact to allow you to get back your data, provided it has not yet been overwritten. If you use it soon after your have formatted a drive, then you have an almost one-hundred percent chance of success. However, even after quite some time of using the hard drive or other media, there is still a good chance of getting it back using software like this. Formatted disk recovery simply couldn't be easier with this user-friendly solution.

It supports hard disks, solid state drives, USB flash drives and digital camera and mobile phone memory cards. Supported file systems include all of those used by Windows, Macintosh and Linux. Whether you have accidentally formatted a memory card in your digital camera or unwittingly formatted a hard drive inside your computer, Unformat should be able to help you.

There are two versions of Unformat. The standard version provides thirty new file signatures to help you search for recoverable files of certain types, and advanced users may also use a simple built-in scripting engine to define their own file signatures.

The Professional version comes with the Active@ Boot Disk creator which supports optical media and USB flash drives.
